Pick-your-own opening hours

Richard Pelly, Wakefield’s Farm Manager, said:
This is a huge time of year for us and one we work towards all year round - to make sure our fruit is ripe, ready and in perfect condition by June.

”Much of our winter was dedicated to pruning raspberry canes and then training them to grow in rows, using a mixture of string and wire.

Throughout the summer we will lightly prune our plum trees, which we planted in 1985.”

Fruit Picking 2011 has now finished

Wakefield's Farm Manager, Richard Pelly, has these top picking tips:

•  Mornings :  Pick your fruit in the morning -  when it is at its coolest. If you have a party, pick the fruit the day before and store in the fridge. It will taste perfect.

•  Handling : When picking most fruits, handle as little as possible. Pinch the stalk with your fingernails and try not to handle the berry.

•  Be cool : When you've picked your fruit keep it cool by getting it straight into a fridge. Cover the fruit with cling film - and enjoy!

•  Tasty treats : Eat them straight up, make jam or turn them into summer puddings. Gooseberries make fabulous wine, blackcurrants are great in jelly (which the kids will love making when you get home) and raspberries are never better than when they are served with a dash of Fromage Frais.
